Children’s Photo Club
For Image Masters Schools
The Image Masters Children's Photo Club is an exciting school-based initiative that encourages pupils to explore photography as part of their daily learning. Open to all pupils, the club helps children use cameras/tablets/photography to capture creativity around the school and engage with the INSPA Creative Wellbeing Activities. Typically led by the Principal, a Teacher (Creative Coach), and 2-4 pupils (Creative Champions) the club promotes teamwork, creative wellbeing, and visual storytelling throughout the school day. Of course, your photo club can expand right across your school community.
To help you get started we have developed a series of free creative wellbeing activities (Exploring the visual, Mindful Moments, and Therapeutic Photography). These can all be accessed via your schools INSPA account at www.inspa.ie.
If you haven’t registered your school yet, you will need to do this first. Each year we launch a new theme for Ireland’s National School Photography Awards and your participating pupils can upload their entries via your school account. The awards have a Junior & Senior Category and their are lots of prizes to be won each year!
Why Photography
As children grow up, they often say things like “I can’t draw,” “I can’t dance,” “I’m not good at sport”, or “I can’t sing.” But it’s not often you hear a child say, “I can’t take a photo.”
Photography is an accessible and fun way for most children to start exploring their thoughts, feelings, and the world around them. It’s easy to get started, no matter your ability or background, and with smartphones and tablets, it’s more accessible than ever. Everyone can have a go!
Taking photos can also help children express themselves in a creative and safe way. It can open up conversations in the classroom, build confidence, and support emotional well-being. For younger children, photography offers a gentle way to share how they feel, even if they don’t yet have the words to explain it. It can be especially helpful for those who are shy, anxious, or find it hard to express themselves in more traditional ways.
Photography can also link to many other areas of learning, like reading, writing, and maths.
